Web
site promotion tips & dangers pt.3
Our
clients often refer others to us, and sometimes link to each other
when relevant and appropriate (which may improve search engine
ranking, but also generates business just like the old-fashioned
method of joining clubs or organizations like the Chamber of
Commerce, to help word of mouth business and get personal
referrals).
Just
like wholesale or retail stores, or large corporations, some
diversify and specialize in certain items, yet are all owned by
the same company or individual. Companies also use
"branding".
For instance, Yamaha makes motorcycles and
grand pianos. Panasonic makes professional cameras used for movies
like "Star Wars", consumer cameras, bread-makers, DVD's,
etc. Sony makes everything from movies and music CD's to
computers. And they all have their own buildings, locations,
re-sellers and websites.
Some search engines haven't caught on to
the necessity of small businesses diversifying in this way yet.
But it can only be a matter of time before they realize that
unrelated products and services owned by a small corporation or
individual, also need to "recommend" each other, their
own diverse product lines, as well as those of others.
For right
now though, they consider people who own various businesses, or
refer customers to a business that is unrelated by whatever
factors they consider to mean unrelated, to be
"spamming" or trying to "cheat" the search
engines. Unfortunately, this can be true, but isn't necessarily
always the case. For now, avoid cross-linking (referring) to any
sites other than those with the same type or closely related type
of product or service.
